Matthew Freedman, MD, was named the inaugural incumbent of the David Goldstein Chair at Dana-Farber, endowed by the late Jonathan Goldstein to support kidney cancer research in memory of his father, David Goldstein. Freedman is known for his research on genitourinary cancers and on epigenetics—the study of markers that alter the function of genes and can influence cancer.

In 2023, Freedman and colleagues developed a blood test using innovative liquid biopsy technology, which can reveal if a person has cancer and, if so, how best to treat it. The David Goldstein Chair enables Freedman to continue such collaborations to advance early detection, interception, and treatment of cancer, including kidney cancers.
