Unrestricted support: A powerful vote of confidence

Summer 2024

The Dana-Farber Campaign is a catalyst for giving at every level, including through the Defy Cancer Fund, and has inspired tremendous unrestricted support from our generous philanthropic community. “Flexible funds represent a powerful vote of confidence in Dana-Farber,” says Laurie H. Glimcher, MD, president and CEO of Dana-Farber and the Richard and Susan Smith Professor of Medicine. “Unrestricted support from our community accelerates our ability to seize emerging opportunities across all programs and pursue breakthroughs that will transform care for patients everywhere.” Together, we can build on this momentum and raise crucial flexible funds to advance revolutionary science, extraordinary care, and exceptional expertise.

Revolutionary Science

Dana-Farber’s unique equal commitment to cancer care and research is only possible thanks to philanthropy. Research is largely done at a financial loss, as many programs do not have adequate or consistent funding from traditional sources. In 2021, for example, only 30% of our research spending was sourced from federal funding and grants. Furthermore, most philanthropic funds are restricted to specific areas, leaving many key programs without dedicated support. Flexible funds allow all aspects of our research enterprise to continue without interruption, accelerating new treatments and approaches that benefit patients everywhere. In 2023, for example, unrestricted funds were leveraged to advance groundbreaking science across early detection, rare cancers, chemical biology, genomics, artificial intelligence, and more.

Extraordinary Care

Dana-Farber is committed to minimizing the stress of treatment for all patients. From major needs including travel, housing, and financial aid, to the details that matter such as soothing lighting, comfortable seating, appealing food, cheerful artwork, and parking assistance, we take the full patient experience to heart. It is this deep compassion that makes Dana-Farber the best place to be treated for cancer. Yet many of the services we provide are not covered by health plans, despite their proven ability to improve outcomes and save lives. These include needs-based patient assistance, patient navigation, psychosocial screening, social workers, and hair preservation measures—as well as lifesaving programs across early detection and survivorship. Unrestricted philanthropy allows us to provide unparalleled care and fully support the needs of our patients and families.

Exceptional Expertise

Dana-Farber is home to world-renowned experts as well as early career investigators who represent the future of cancer science and care. To further our excellence and promote breakthroughs, the Institute invests millions of dollars each year in space, technology, and resources for our team as well as in recruiting new talent. The return on those investments, year after year, fuels exponential growth and discovery. For example, recent recruits to Dana-Farber have expanded our expertise across pediatrics, nursing, palliative care, immunotherapy, data science, early detection, and treatment resistance. Unrestricted philanthropic support is critical to supporting our brilliant scientists and clinicians—sustaining the level and quantity of talent that our patients deserve.
