Levin gift honors Lee Nadler, MD

Larry Levin.

How do you thank the doctor who saved your loved one’s life? You help other physicians do the same for their patients.

Ronnie Levin and her family recently made a gift of $100,000 through the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) to establish the Levin/Nadler Award, which will support the work of exceptional early career investigators at Dana-Farber. This annual award is named for Lee Nadler, MD, senior vice president of experimental medicine and the PMC Chair at Dana-Farber, who courageously treated Ronnie’s husband, Larry, for large cell, high-grade, non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1986.

“We are honored to support talented young investigators that embody the creativity and courage of Dr. Nadler, who literally cured Larry’s cancer and changed the course of our lives.”

Known for going the extra mile for his patients, Nadler put Larry on an experimental therapy that worked when all other treatments failed. Larry lived another 35 years and formed a strong bond with Nadler, who in 1991 first encouraged Larry to ride in the PMC—the annual bike-a-thon that is the nation’s most successful athletic fundraiser and the Institute’s largest single contributor. Larry and Ronnie did so 11 times, including four rides with their daughter, Kim, providing early “Living Proof” of the impact of Nadler and the PMC. The Levin Family hopes that today’s trailblazing physician-scientists will be inspired by Nadler’s example and pursue bold research that helps other patients survive cancer. Ronnie said, “We are honored to support talented young investigators that embody the creativity and courage of Dr. Nadler, who literally cured Larry’s cancer and changed the course of our lives.”
